A master suite addition to an existing rancher quickly turned into a whole-house renovation that liberated the home from a dated 1970’s post-modern makeover. The original ranch ethos was restored and amplified by adding large sliding glass doors and window banks to connect interior spaces with new exterior courtyards. Natural light flows into once dark rooms from new ‘eyebrow dormers’ that pierce the existing roof. These light catching roof windows were integrated with new vaulted ceilings to help break up the monotonous boxy interiors. An existing inwardly focused great room was reinvented by moving the old fireplace off center from the view the new ledge stone fireplace is indoor-outdoor and provides a secondary focus for both the family room and the dining terrace outside. Crafty cedar porches integrate with simple roof forms that shelter interior rooms from the elements while providing relaxing exterior spaces, included a staved cedar hot-tub deck adjacent to the master bathroom.
